about StudioSTL
StudioSTLis a literary arts organization that offers youth, 6 to 18, high-quality writing and publishing opportunities, individual mentoring services, and a full menu of one-of-a-kind creative writing activities designed to keep them writing and coming back for more.
Our mission: StudioSTL helps students discover, develop, and celebrate their individual voice through writing. All of our programs are based on our belief that a literary toolbox and writing skills - whether for fun, for school, in personal and professional life - are indispensable lifelong gifts.
Youth writing services currently underway or in planning stages include:
- One-on-one mentoring and coaching on theme-based writing projects with publication in professional-quality books, magazines, and newspapers;
- After-school, individual mentoring;
- Project-based writing workshops and events;
- Student readings;
- On-line shared writing, including "pen pals," and a student news wire service;
- Summer camps;
- Community partnerships with schools:
- Field trips for bookmaking;
- In-school workshops and writing support in all curriculum areas; and
- Community "book launch" events;
The need for writing enhancement and the call for community-based partnerships to supplement in-school writing instruction has become a national movement and integral part of urban education reform. With schools facing the daunting challenge of educating so many of their students in even the most basic writing skills, the ability to focus on personalized and creative writing programs can become near-impossible. The result is a generation of youth who lack the ability to effectively communicate in writing, while also lacking awareness of the value of writing as a tool to realize their potential.
